What Exactly is a Nut?

Nuts are the dried seeds of trees or bushes.  Their edible kernels are covered with a hard shell. Almonds, cashews, pecans, walnuts, Brazils, filberts (hazelnuts), macadamias and pistachios are among the different types of nuts.  Peanuts are technically legumes but are generally considered to be nuts when it comes to eating and cooking.  Sunflower and pumpkin (pepitas) are seeds that are used like nuts and also are rich in nutrients.
